Turkish Aviation History Matrix

An interactive platform mapping the Turkish aviation industry through a navigation-display-inspired matrix.

The project goes back to my elementary school years—when my enthusiasm for aviation was fueled by the books I read about aviation history.

I used to take notes and make marks in dozens of aviation history books. I've always wanted to put all my notes on a big blackboard and see the bigger picture.

Years later, I returned to that need and set out to fulfill it through interactive data visualization. Taking visual inspiration from aircraft navigation displays and data from aviation history books, I've created the Turkish Aviation Industry Matrix project.

The data, which is the core of the platform, is extracted from my readings. They are all collected from the aviation books and some online resources. Then, extracted data are converted into a usable format for design.

What you'll see on the screen are dozens of shapes with vivid colors. Each red rectangles represents the people, turquoise triangles represent the projects, and magenta asterisk symbols represent the institutions which has a role in shaping Turkish aviation. By clicking on the icons, you'll see an information pop-up related to that icon.

If you hover over any of the icons, you'll see green connecting lines with dashed lines connecting to related other icons. Each of these lines hides information about the relationship of the related icons. When you hover over the dashed connection lines, it becomes active and when you click on it, you'll see how these icons are related to each other.

The icons and the connecting lines between them carry an amount of information that I have extracted from my own readings and that would take about 90 pages in Times New Roman 12pt (more to be added).

It needs design revisions, code optimizations, and content enrichment. You may see some design issues. I am also aware of some of the issues and have an idea how to solve them from a design point of view, but due to my limited coding experience, not all of them have been solved yet.

All suggestions, comments and even collaborations are welcome. Please contact me via the contact form or askarakurt7@gmail.com. Would be glad to hear from you.
